Walden Athletic Complex

The Walden Athletic Complex is a sports facility that serves Midtown High School with baseball/softball and football/soccer/lacrosse fields, a fieldhouse, and parking. It is located in the historic Sweet Auburn district, approximately two miles south of the high school. To make way for the new facility, the old Walden Middle School structure was demolished. The fieldhouse was designed with subtle visual cues from the façade of Midtown High School while also maintaining the appropriate character of the neighboring community.

The new fieldhouse is equipped with a staff office, locker rooms, storage, concessions, restrooms, and utility spaces. The locker rooms are designed to accommodate approximately 50 students each, while the public restrooms are designed to accommodate up to 550 event attendees. The fieldhouse is designed to be a low-maintenance facility, with a refined use of materials and systems. The design follows economical and appropriate strategies to minimize energy consumption. For example, a north-facing standing seam metal roof with deep soffits shades the south-facing elevation while further sheltering the envelope.
