Midtown Union was inspired by the project location, focusing on the Midtown Arts District and then zooming out to its context within Atlanta, nicknamed the City in the Forest. The project consists of a 26-story, 600,000-square-foot Class A office building, along with a luxury residential tower, boutique hotel, street retail, and parking. Urban murals are gateways to the project and optical-inspired art is the façade of the garage.
Our design intent was to create a people-centered space that would not only reflect the vibrancy of the Arts District but would also bring talent back into the office by creating a comfortable and accessible space. To this end, the lobby is more than just a transitory space; we created a split-level lobby and stair that function as a communal workspace or a reception space for events. Amenities onsite are plentiful and shared among all the tenants. These include a fitness studio, large outdoor terrace with views of the city, conference center with a large training room, and board room boasting adjoining communal lounge spaces.
Knowing how biophilic design can improve occupants’ health and well-being, we ensured a strong connection back to nature. Interior greenery mimics the exterior landscape and creates refuge around the lobby seating. The material palette uses natural materials like stone, warm white oak, and an abundance of plants, and biophilic patterns can be found throughout the space, such as in the wood-style metal panel ceiling.
Midtown Union draws visitors to the site. We transformed the 26-foot elevation in between the office and residential towers into Arts Center Way, a green space that connects Spring and West Peachtree streets. The street diversifies the connection points into the building and offers an area for people to meet or linger and relax. Two major companies, Invesco and American Express, have signed to take up residence in the new office tower.
