Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton, LLP engaged Cooper Carry to design a brand new, forward-thinking space for the law firm’s branch in San Diego. Being in a Southern California coastal town it was important to the firm that the design of their space reflect the culture and the personality of the clientele that they serve. The design aesthetic of the space is light and modern, with a warm richness of materials, texture and marine inspired details.

The client facing spaces in the conference center, along with the attorney and staff areas, were opened up to be more collaborative and comfortable. To facilitate a second place workspace to use when away from ones office, a signature entry, reception and community hub space was created. This unique area includes a feature wall adjacent to a café, lounge and standing height bar to encourage informa collaboration and multiple meeting break out venues. With a small real estate footprint, a major project driver was space efficiency and to maintain an open, light and transparent feel.

While the front of house hosts meetings and gatherings for staff, attorneys and clients, there is a strong focus on the privacy which was maintained for the firm’s office space. Perimeter attorney offices for the attorneys are designed to be one single “universal” size, along the exterior wall, and incorporate full glass fronts for higher transparency and to allow the interior space to experience daylight and views. The traditional double-loaded corridor was broken down to include an office landscape of open work tables, print stations, hoteling spaces and semi-private and open workstations. These areas work on a flexible module, allowing for another use at any time as the firm changes over time.

The overall outcome of the project achieved the comfort, functionality and focus which were appropriate for the firm and served to reflect both the personality and culture of this Southern California law office.
