The Innovation Town Center Master Plan is designed to connect the existing suburban-style Prince William campus of George Mason University, neighboring Innovation Technology Park, and surrounding residents to create a unified “communiversity.” Three adjoining property owners: George Mason University, Prince William County Department of Economic Development, and the owners of the Odin/Feldman/Libby property charged the design team with developing a master plan that would draw a community together and encourage social interaction and learning. Through this plan, George Mason University intended to expand its existing Prince William County campus. Prince William County sought to create a cohesive community in the area surrounding the Innovation Technology park. The concept for this plan emerged from the realization that George Mason University and its partner components, Freedom Center and Hylton Performing Arts Center, could create a substantial anchor for such a community. Alone, these institutions are not well integrated as one place; however, combined with a captive audience and an economic engine like a town center, they could mature into a healthy community. Ultimately, the goals of the university, county, and private owners aligned towards a common aspiration to create a master plan that would connect people through fitness, education and culture.
