The Johnson Studio collaborated with chef Ali Mesghali, who had a vision of an authentic Persian restaurant, one that conveys a modern and elegant experience. Inspired by the movement of whirling dervishes, Persian calligraphy, and rustic old-world elements of architecture, the design at Rumi’s Kitchen's DC location creates an authentic Persian look with subtle details and references. The space incorporates the essence of Persian hospitality and cuisine and highlights the food with Tandoor ovens on display in the Persian Blue tile clad expo kitchen.
Custom plaster wall finish was applied and then carved away to create a unique mural that is the focal point of the dining room. Chandeliers mimic the spinning of whirling dervishes while traditional colors of gold and Persian blue are incorporated throughout to imbue the warmth and history of the cuisine.
The restaurant has made an impact with the culinary crowd of DC. It was named one of the most exciting new restaurants in 2020 by Eater DC.
