Waikiki, HI
To bring the International Market Place to life, Cooper Carry collaborated with Taubman to create a premiere shopping district that serves as the living room for Oahu and Waikiki, Hawaii. With two levels of shopping, a third level of dining, and an entertainment deck, the International Market Place is the preeminent shopping center in Waikiki.
Nearly 60 years ago, a Polynesian-themed village was established in the heart of Waikiki, called International Market Place. The destination attracted kamaʻāina, celebrities, and tourists from all over the world to shop, dine, and enjoy special experiences, including performances from legendary Hawaiian musician Don Ho. This iconic and beloved destination, noted as the site where tiki culture was born, closed in 2014.
In August 2016, Taubman wanted to reimagine International Market Place, as a 343,000-square-foot, open-air retail, dining, and entertainment destination. We crafted a design narrative inspired by the rich culture, history, and natural beauty of the region, one that celebrates the people of Waikiki and welcomes visitors to feel at home. The center showcases a dynamic collection of over 90 luxury and contemporary retailers as well as the largest collection of restaurants in Waikiki. Placemaking details include flowing water features, lush landscaping, and an iconic banyan tree that is more than a century old.
This project was designed in collaboration with JPRA Architects.
